The most fundamental goal of the National Curriculum for English is for children to learn to communicate and engage with the world around them confidently and effectively. Our ambition is that pupils will learn to do so meaningfully and with purpose through the high-quality structures and strong ambition of our curriculum. Our approach synthesises the multiple aspects of knowledge and competency needed to write effectively and sequences these, using cognitive science to ensure that pupils embed learning into the long-term memory.
Our Reading Spine (shown below) has been selected to ensure that the books are progressive in terms of language and content year on year and develop our children’s understanding of literature. They are also linked explicitly to the wider curriculum when relevant for children to be immersed in their learning. The spine books have been chosen to have 4 golden threads that are developed from Reception to Year 6 ensuring children are prepared for their next phase of learning. These threads are Heritage texts, BAME author or protagonist, strong female role models, and books that address a specific social, ethical or moral issue.
