In our Music curriculum, we want to develop children’s creative ability and build an appreciation and enjoyment of music.
Our aims are:
- Develop children’s ability to listen to, appreciate and evaluate a wide variety of music, including work of great composers and musicians, developing an understanding of their own culture and that of others.
- Explore a range of inter-related musical elements, including pitch, tempo, dynamics, texture and structure.
- Encourage active participation in creating and developing musical ideas using vocals and both tuned and un-tuned instruments.
- Enable pupils to explore and express their ideas and feelings about music in a variety of ways, including movement and discussion.
- Develop a sense of group identity and togetherness through composing, rehearsing and performing music with others, to an audience.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Children also explore music using activities on pulse, rhythm and pitch, using their voices and playing instruments.
Key stage 1
Our curriculum is built around the Charanga Music Scheme, which enables children to build and extend their knowledge and skills incrementally as they move through school. The Charanga Music Scheme introduces children to a wide range of musical genres and children learn and perform songs, chants and rhythms whilst learning to play glockenspiel and untuned percussion.
Alongside the Charanga Music Scheme, our Key Stage 1 children also learn through the Da Capo programme, which incorporates Kodály and Dalcroze inspired approaches in a child-friendly way to focus on pitching the voice, rhythm, composition, expression and early notation.
Key stage 2
In Key Stage 2 pupils are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They are encouraged to develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory.
All children have classroom instrumental teaching (Ocarina – years 3 and 4, ukulele or handbells – years 5 and 6) in addition to the Charanga Music Scheme lessons.
Further opportunities in music are a key part of life at Morley Primary. We have an active choir who participate in regular events including singing at the Norfolk Show and the national Young Voices concert. Many children additionally learn further tuned musical instruments through peripatetic music lessons and the Norfolk Music Hub. Further information is included in our Music Development Plan, accessed from the link below.
