Modern Foreign Languages

Modern Foreign Languages – French

Intent

Through a study of the French language and culture we aim to develop Children’s understanding of the world and spark their interest and curiosity into countries beyond the UK. We want to equip our children with the confidence to learn new languages and be able to understand both written and spoken French. We want children to be able to engage in dialogue and communicate effectively in a range of practical situations.

Implementation

In the EYFS and Key Stage 1 children are given the opportunity to explore other languages through stories, song and celebrations and they are encouraged to respond to what they hear and understand with relevant comments and questions.

In Key Stage 2 children will study French through a variety of engaging stimulus such as songs, books, poems, rhymes, film clips and conversations. They will engage in dialogue, listening attentively to questions or conversations and demonstrate their understanding by responding appropriately. Children will be taught correct intonation and pronunciation and will be able to broaden their own vocabulary with dictionaries and by access to French texts. Children will begin to write in French for different purposes and will have a strong foundation ready for further study of languages at high school

Impact

Through high quality French teaching we are determined that the children will develop an awareness of cultural similarities and differences around the world. They will have an interest in learning languages and demonstrate their confidence in using French to respond and communicate in practical situations.
